What’s in a Name?

Posted on Posted in Workshop, UCC, Personal Branding

At a recent workshop with some undergraduate students, the debate about how an Arts Degree is viewed in today’s digital world.  I must admit I was taken back by how these students had the idea that an Arts Degree, still to this day is seen as the less valued one in certain circles.

The debate came about when discussing their profiles and the overall branding of their college work in particular.  As I explained to them as I do with every client how important the tagline is on any profile, so in their case it would have been student, studying *insert Degree here*.  The overall feeling was that of worry.  They were worried it would let them down when applying for roles in particular corporate companies.

My answer to them was, what’s in a name?  It’s what you do with it and what you take from it for the future is what is counted.

Show them who you are, what you can do and how you kick ass doing it.  This can be done by showing potential employers what you achieved during your time in college through projects, working in groups, taking part, being active and enjoying the whole process.

So do corporate people look down upon the Arts Degree?  I hope not.

An Arts Degree opens one up to the world and all that goes on around each and every person.  Everything that makes us human (humanities), makes us tick, makes us become who we long to be, helps students to be open to the world and create wonderful things and read amazing pieces of literature, become exploratory and be liberating.

I am a proud Master of Arts Graduate of Digital Arts and Humanities from University College Cork.  My Arts Degree from my studies, lecturers, tutors, classmates and the experience itself has given me a new sense of confidence, willingness to learn from those around me and determined to succeed.

Wouldn’t you want to hire a person that is so well educated and can inspire you, instead of someone who is waiting to be inspired?

So hire an Arts Graduate……be liberated, inspired and amazed!
